Close, But No Cigar

If the All Star vote totals hold Jason Heyward will make this year’s All Star team.  A rookie and an All Star the same year.  That’s pretty special and impressive.  There’s just one problem, if he makes the team, he won’t play.  Close, but no cigar.

Heyward is currently on the 15 day DL for the Braves with a deep bone bruise to his thumb.  He is wearing a brand new immobilizing splint.  He is scheduled to be available the day before the All Star game, but he said that he would not play.  He would not want to take the chance of re-injuring or having a setback and jeopardizing the Braves second half of the season with an extended absence.

He will get to go and participate in all the surrounding festivities.  He will still be recognized as being voted to play in his first big league year.  But he won’t be on the field for the game.  Kind of like almost winning the lottery, but coming up one number short.

I do understand his reasoning for not playing and do believe it is the right choice.  It’s just unfortunate the injury had to happen.  It would have been great to see him in the All Star game.  If all things remain even, I’m sure he will be back there next year and hopefully, this time, he gets the cigar too.
